Learning to ride a horse, to be able to progress at the four paces of the horse, through walking, trotting, cantering and jumping can be a protracted and time consuming process requiring expert tuition throughout the increasing confidence and competence of the novice rider from Ab initio to accomplished.
The training of riding instructors within the UK is supervised by the British Horse Society with four levels of instructor certification which at the highest level ensures some of the most accomplished internationally recognised riding training in the world. Level four specialist instructors go on to school, train and supervise internationally recognised leaders and their horses within their own riding disciplines in Dressage, show jumping, eventing and driving.

Although in the majority of international equestrian competition the ‘English’ style saddle predominates in all its task specific variations and most European and UK training is based on its use, the ‘Western’ saddle is widely popular for recreational and working applications on many continents and has distinct advantages for comfort, stability and long days in the saddle.
